Spam, Spam, Spam, Spam. . . .
From Spam musubi to carved Spam art, this ubiquitous local favorite flavors all aspects of life.

Developed by Hormel to create a ham product which did not need refrigeration, the ubiquitous ham in a can got its meaty moniker as the result of a competition to create a name somewhat more palatable than "Hormel Spiced Ham." The name "Spam" netted its coiner a whopping $100 - the equivalent of around $1200 in today's money market.

For lots of interesting Spamorabilia, check out How Stuff Works.

     Pineapple Spam

1 can Spam
1 can pineapple rings

Quarter pineapple rings. Cut Spam into thin slices and then cut the slices in half, creating thin squares of Spam. Set the squares in a pan which will fit under the broiler. Top each square with a piece of pineapple and broil until crispy. Serve with rice and lightly stir-fried green beans. Bento box is optional. This old plantation recipe fed many a cane and pineapple worker.
